#SCUChallenge 82 - Coding Part 2!

This is the second part of our 'Coding for Kids' Challenge! (find the first one here: https://bit.ly/SCUChallenge76)

Coding is a really important skill - it's being able to work out step-by-step instructions (an 'algorithm'), spotting and developing patterns ('programming'), and working out where they might have gone wrong ('debugging'). Part 1 set us up with the basics, so once you've mastered them, have a go at this one where you'll learn skills in 'logical reasoning' – (explaining why something happens). You'll also learn about 'decomposition' (breaking down a task into smaller, more-manageable parts) and 'persevering' (being determined, resilient, and never giving up) - great skills for life!

You can download the full challenge here: https://bit.ly/SCUChallenge82

To claim your credits, please complete and return a Sheffield CU Home Learning Challenge Reflection Diary which can be found here: https://bit.ly/SheffCUReflectionDiary

Once you have completed all the challenges, email your reflection diary along with evidence of your completed activity to cu@sheffield.gov.uk (photos/videos etc.) and we'll award CU credits. We can't wait to see your work - please send us a picture along with your reflection diary and feel free to share photos/videos on Facebook and Twitter! #SCUChallenges

#SCUChallenge 81 - International Mud Day!

International Mud Day happens each year on 29th June and is a great opportunity to celebrate all the activities and learning that takes place outdoors, come rain or shine! We can also use this day to remember how important it is to play outside with natural resources, getting dirty and muddy. There is so much research into the benefits. We can wash our hands and bodies afterwards, as well as washing our clothes too, so there's really no excuse. So today, we challenge you to make your own mud kitchen/cafe!

#SCUChallenge 80 - Armed Forces Day!

This year, Armed Forces Day is on Saturday 27th June.  Armed Forces Day is celebrated each year, and is a chance for everyone to think about all the people (and their families), who are serving (or have served) in the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force. Especially on Armed Forces Day, we can recognise their service to our country (and others) as well as thank them for their work.

So, this challenge helps you to do just that - learn about the Armed Forces, learn some of the skills they need in their role, and to thank them for their work. All three sections of the Armed Forces have Cadets (a junior section) that you can join and make new friends, learn new skills and have loads of fun. The Sheffield Sea Cadets are one of our Learning Destinations! For more info on Cadets, click this link - https://www.gov.uk/guidance/the-cadet-forces-and-mods-youth-work

CU Festival of Fun 2020!

It's Friday, and we have a special announcement to make...

The highlight of our summer is always the CU Festival of Fun which we host in the first 3 weeks of the school holidays. Our aim is to provide children and families with some fantastic fun learning activities which are delivered by our Learning Destinations right across the city and the best part is, they are all free with a Passport to Learning!

Unfortunately due to the current circumstances, we can't deliver our 6th CU Festival of Fun as we would normally, which is disappointing for us, as we know it might be for you too. BUT, we are definitely a glass half full team who are always up for a challenge so we think this has presented us with a really good opportunity to think outside the box, and work with our Learning Destinations to come up with something extra special for you to collect CU credits, and have some fun learning too!

So, we present to you, the all new CU Festival of Fun 2020!!!!

Packed full with downloadable or live online FREE activities from our amazing Learning Destinations who have definitely taken up the challenge and come up with some brilliant and innovative ways to keep you entertained and most of all, provide you with LOTS of FUN too!!!

Watch this space for more info coming very soon!

#SCUChallenge 79 - Bubbles!

We've been hearing a lot about 'bubbles' lately, but this challenge is all about the type that float around, have beautiful colours, and eventually go 'pop'! Bubbles are formed when air is captured inside a liquid mixture of some kind. The amount of air is increased and the liquid mixture expands to keep the air inside - just like when you blow up a balloon. But once the liquid mixture stretches too far it breaks, and the bubble goes 'pop'. But what can we do to make tiny bubbles? What can we do to make HUGE bubbles? Let's find out...

Even though we can't visit many of them at the moment, we're lucky enough to have the brilliant Yorkshire Wildlife Park a short drive away in Doncaster! During the last few months, they've been delivering some FANTASTIC live activities on

Children taking part in the Challenge will join the Silly Squad, an adventurous team of animals who love to have a laugh and get stuck in to all different kinds of funny books!

Of course, at the moment, we can't all race down to our local library, sign up and borrow a load of books to get reading but fear not, we CAN all keep reading using the Council's online library. This challenge will guide you through the steps in getting signed up to the Council's digital library (adults and children!), as well as registering for the Summer Reading Challenge itself.
