Spring Home Learning Passport Activity Newsletter - now available!

The Sheffield Children's University Passport home learning activity newsletter for the Spring Bank holiday is now available!

You can find the newsletter here: https://bit.ly/SCUSpringNewsletter

As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and resulting Government guidance, all of our Learning Destinations are not running as they normally would. However, many have started to deliver their activities in a different way, using platforms such as Zoom and Youtube which is great to see! Please do check with them directly about this as CU credits can still be earned by taking part in these activities and Learning Destinations will be sending us registers as usual. Others may be producing online, downloadable activities so keep an eye on their websites and social media for more info. We’re also continuing with our 2020: Year of the Nurse and Midwife activities and they’re all included in this newsletter, so there’s plenty to choose from.

On the 25th March 2020, we started to publish our very own Sheffield CU home learning challenges. These are shared every weekday with a special weekend challenge published each Saturday and will continue for the foreseeable future too! Today, we published our 50th daily CU Home Learning Challenge since schools closed to most pupils, and we want to say a HUGE thank you to all those who have taken part so far. We have been overwhelmed by the commitment, resourcefulness and real love of learning we have seen in the children and families who have taken part and we are absolutely LOVING seeing your photos, videos and examples of the fantastic learning you’ve been choosing to do at home! Do keep sharing them with us on Facebook or Twitter using the hashtag #SCUChallenges.

If you would like to take part in any of the challenges, we have collated details on them all into the newsletter. There is currently no time limit, and no order in which to do these so feel free to pick and chose as you like! Also, there is further info on how you can claim CU credits for completing these challenges if you normally attend a Sheffield school and have a Passport to Learning.

If you see challenges published by other CUs across the county, then do feel free to complete them. To claim your CU credits, you’ll need to download a diary sheet from our website (or use the one attached to the back of this newsletter!) and email it in to us to make sure your credits are counted! Find Learning Destinations in Sheffield (www.sheffield.gov.uk/cu) and beyond at www.childrensuniversity.co.uk

#SCUChallenge 48 - Thank a Teacher!

We all know that teachers are AMAZING! They prepare exciting lessons, they help us learn and they really care about ALL of the children in their classes and school. But it's not just the teachers in our schools who are AMAZING - there's a whole army of staff who work hard to make sure we have everything we need to learn. The Teaching Assistants, Learning Mentors, office staff, lunchtime staff, music teachers, cleaners, PE staff…and lots more! Even though most children are learning at home right now, the staff at your school are still working really hard, either in school or from home, so it's right that we use today to say a great, big 'THANK YOU' to them.

#SCUChallenge 47 - Quick Time Building with Magic Slime

Today's challenge is a fun way to make slime using only a few ingredients! This is sometimes called 'Non-Newtonian Slime'. A non-Newtonian fluid is a fluid that does not follow Newton's law of viscosity (this means it stays runny, even if you press it or squash it). In non-Newtonian fluids, viscosity (or how runny it is) can change when under force to either more liquid or more solid. Ketchup, for example, becomes runnier when shaken and is an example of a non-Newtonian fluid.

#SCUChallenge 44 - Find a Pen Pal!

The art of letter-writing has become less common with the invention of the internet, email, texting and messaging via social media.  This makes receiving a personal letter even more exciting nowadays, so for today's challenge, we want you to help make someone's day and write them a letter. You could even become 'pen pals' - where you write to each other regularly, telling them all about what you've been up to, etc.

It's important to ask an adult to help you arrange who you will become pen pals with and write to - Maybe a friend from school? Maybe a family friend? Or you could write a one-off letter to the residents in your local care home?

This is a brilliant opportunity to get all your family/friends involved either in your home, or via video call and also to learn what everyone is good at or if they have a special talent/skill. You could even make some of them judges, whilst others are performers too. Let's get started!

#SCUChallenge 41 - Make your own dream catcher!

Dream catchers were created by an indigenous group of people living in North America. Traditionally used by children, the idea is that a dream catcher is hung above someone's bed while they sleep, and during the night bad dreams get trapped in the web, so they're unable to reach the dreamer. When the sun rises the next day, those bad dreams disappear. Good dreams, on the other hand, pass through the dream catcher and slide down the feathers to the sleeping person. Today we challenge you to get creative and make your own dream catcher!

#SCUChallenge 39 - Year of the Nurse and Midwife 2020!

Did you know that 2020 is the international Year of the Nurse and Midwife? Perfect timing we think! It's a chance to celebrate all the wonderful work that nurses and midwives do right across the world. It's also a chance for us to say 'thank you' to them, to learn about their roles and perhaps even think about becoming a nurse, a midwife or any of the thousands of jobs that are vital to the NHS.

We've been working since last year with colleagues in the NHS who are developing a number of CU activities especially for us, which will run throughout this year and on into next year. By taking part in the challenges you'll learn about different areas of the NHS, famous nurses and their stories, as well as how to deal with a range of common illnesses and a bit of first aid to help deal with minor injuries too.

Thanks once again to our amazing NHS colleagues - for these challenges of course but also for all the magnificent work they are all doing at the moment. We hope you enjoy them!
