The Commonwealth Games Queens Baton Relay

The Commonwealth Games Queens Baton arrives in Sheffield this Sunday 1st June!

 

And our friends at SIV: Sheffield International Venues are holding a free day of sports and activites to celebrate!  Head on down to Concord Sports Centre from 11am to take part. Make sure you take your Passport along too, as the 1st June is also the day Sheffield International Venues are officially launched as one of our fantastic Learning Destinations. This means you can collect CU credits in your Passport to Learning for taking part in all their taught lessons, as well as at the Queens Baton activities! Don't worry if you don't have your Passport to Learning yet, our lovely Helen will be at the event and you can pick one up from the CU stall!

Can't make it to Concord? SIV are offering £1 activities across all their venues this weekend including swimming, ice skating, tennis and more!

Collect credits at Sheffield International Venues!

Good things come to those who wait!

We are THRILLED to announce that from the 1st June 2014 Sheffield International Venues (SIV) will be a validated Learning Destination which means you can collect credits taking part in any sports lesson at any one of their centres!

This includes:

• Ponds Forge
• Concord Sports Centre
• Hillsborough Leisure Centre
• Heeley Pool
• Graves Tennis & Leisure Centre
• Springs Leisure Centre
• Westfield Sports Centre
• English Institute of Sport (EIS) Sheffield
• Ice Sheffield

If you take your Passport to Learning along to lessons with you, staff will check the consent form in the front and sign it off. Importantly, there will be a Children's University register for you to add your name to (on your first visit) and then each time you take part make sure you mark your attendance on the register at the reception desk at each of the centres. Please be aware, if you do not add your name to this register we will not know you have attended activities and will not be able to award credits.

To coincide with our launch of all of the Sheffield International Venues Sports Centres as a validated Learning Destinations and the arrival of the Commonwealth Games Queens Baton in Sheffield, you can head along to Concord Sports Centre on Sunday 1st June, celebrate the Baton's arrival in Sheffield, take part in a number of sporting activities and collect CU Credits in your Passport to Learning!

Children and young people who take along a Passport to Learning to all the activities listed in the newsletter will be able to earn additional CU credits by taking part. There's also an up to date list and contact details of our validated Learning Destinations. If you don't have a Passport to Learning yet, don't worry! You can pop into any local library across the city and buy one for the bargain price of £2!

Celebrate!

Our 28th CU Awards Ceremony took place on Wednesday, with over 120 children and young people all poised to receive their Gold Awards for taking part in over 100, 200, 300 etc hours of learning in their own time.

Sheffield Hallam University hosted the ceremony, which took place in the magnificent Pennine Lecture Theatre and there were special speeches from Professor Karen Bryan, Vice-Chancellor of the University, Debbie Bird from the (inter)national CU Trust and Jack Clare, a student at Sheffield Hallam who talked about student life.

Children and young people from CU secondary schools were presented with their awards along with children and young people who have been collecting credits away from school using their Passport to Learning. We also presented two very special awards, our first Gold Fellowship Awards for 1000 hours of out of school learning! Dave Berry from HEPP (Higher Education Progression Partnership) presented both students with a special award to recognise this fantastic achievement and they were joined by Heeley City Farm, where the two students collected their credits.

Sew Amazing!

Children at Beck Primary School have been very busy raising lots of money for Macmillan Cancer Care in their spare time by knitting and selling chicks that contained a special Easter surprise!

After starting a knitting club after school as part of their Children's University activities, Karen Leasley and other members of staff in the school encouraged the children to put their newly learned skills to good use and fund raise for a fantastic cause. A number of parents/carers helped out too, and demand was so great, children were knitting at home as well as in knitting club to ensure there were enough chicks for everyone!

Originally all proceeds were to be split equally between the knitting club which would enable it to continue, and Macmillan but as the children ended up raising a lot more than expected they were able to donate the majority of the money to Macmillan. 

Congratulations to all the fantastic children, parents/carers and staff involved in raising such an incredible amount of money for such a brilliant cause. We are very VERY proud of you!
