Celebrating 2021

The festive season is upon us, the year is drawing to a close, and there is only one thing to do. Celebrate!

2021 has certainly been another extraordinary year! It’s been full of highs and lows but as we reflect back, one thing that has remained constant is the outstanding commitment to learning shown by children and their families, by schools, by Learning Destinations and by our partners.

Time after time we have witnessed school staff, parents/carers, activity providers and colleagues going above and beyond to ensure they could continue to deliver as many learning opportunities as possible for the children and young people in their care. They have continually demonstrated their dedication, creativity and kindness, and we are so proud to work alongside them. And time and time again we have been truly amazed by the resilience and positivity of the amazing children and young people of our city who have continued to learn and achieve, despite the challenges they have faced.

They have certainly inspired us to keep driving forward and we feel really proud to have been able to continue to provide what support we could as well as growing Sheffield CU this year too. We look forward to 2022 and hopefully celebrating the commitment and achievements of our amazing CU members at one of our real life award ceremonies as soon as possible!

In the meantime, here’s our Sheffield CU year in numbers…

  • 44,892 children and young people with CU credits in Sheffield

  • 5 virtual ceremony experiences were rolled out to our award winners who couldn’t attend real life ceremonies due to COVID restrictions. Children and young people were invited to take part in special celebratory home learning challenge and watch a Sheffield CU virtual ceremony video full of special speeches and performances. Schools were offered loans of our university style caps and gowns to support in school celebrations and our individual passport award winners received a special book of activity vouchers from our Learning Destinations

Activities funded in this round included an attention autism club, a samba club, a mighty minds club, a cooking club, a gardening club and an imagination gaming club
  • 1 parent/carer survey was rolled out for the first time inviting families to tell us what they think about the service we offer so we can continue to ensure we are doing all we can to meet the needs of children, young people and families in our city. We asked them what they thought about our award ceremonies, why they thought it was important for schools to be part of CU and what difference CU had on their child as well as lots of other things too! There were lots of positive outcomes, some of which you can find here: https://bit.ly/SCUParentCarerSurvey
  • Over 100 participating CU schools across South Yorkshire, all supported by South Yorkshire CU, led by Katie and Helen through Sheffield Hallam University. This work aims to develop a brand new regional CU partnership to create even more opportunities for the children, families, schools and activity providers of South Yorkshire. • And a partridge in a pear treeeee! 😃

Finally, we want to take this opportunity to say a HUGE thank you to you, along with all our colleagues, schools, Learning Destinations and partners for continuing to support our work and ensuring the children and young people of our wonderful city are celebrated and rewarded for their achievements, even in the most challenging of circumstances.

We really hope you enjoy the festive season, have a restful break and look forward to seeing you in the new year.

Developing Essential Skills - for EVERYONE at Sheffield Children's University

At Sheffield Children's University, we've been thinking (and talking) a lot about life skills recently, and how important they are. We need these skills to adapt to all kinds of situations in life - not just at school, college, university or work but in life more generally. You might have already seen that we are now tracking how children and young people develop a series of 8 essential life skills through their participation in CU activities. We've been working with an organisation called SkillsBuilder who (with partners) have identified 8 key skills:

Over time, you (and your child) will be able to see how their skills are developing - which ones they are becoming masters at, as well as the ones that might need a little more work - through the reports attached to their awards. We'll also be able to see at a glance, which skills are being developed the most and the least across Sheffield as a whole. This information will help us and our partners to develop activities and events to help meet any gaps, ensuring Sheffield's children, young people and families are developing the skills they need to be the best they can be.

Developing skills in our team

Here at Sheffield CU, we've always believed that helping people to develop their skills is REALLY important. That's why we've always had Apprentices in our team. An apprenticeship is a job which includes lots of training and is a great way to develop all your essential life skills as well as experience of work all at the same time. Quite simply, we COULD NOT run Sheffield Children's University without our Apprentices and so we thought it was time you heard how our Apprentices have developed their skills as part of our team...and how this continues to the present day.

So, first, here's Sakina to tell you a little more...

'I started with the Sheffield CU Team back in August 2012. I saw the advert online for the role which was an Apprentice learning all about Business Support. When I first joined the team, I was very overwhelmed. I couldn't believe that such a small team could do so much but I was also amazed that an initiative like this was available to everyone in Sheffield.'

'When I first started, my role was very much around traditional 'Business Support' tasks. That's the things that are done 'behind the scenes' to ensure everything works. Since 2012 though, my role has changed dramatically. In the early days, my role was very much data inputting (that's adding all the registers and the CU credits) and certificate production. Now, 9 years later, I mentor the Apprentices in our team. I'm in a good position to be able to do this as I know how they're feeling. I've been there and can help them overcome challenges as well as develop their new skills.'

And that she does! Sakina is an AMAZING mentor both to Apprentices in our team and to other Business Support Apprentices working in other teams.

'Now I have more experience and skills myself, I am part of the bigger conversation around the projects that CU runs. I also lead on the planning, preparation, and organisation of all the Gold award ceremonies. When I look back, I can see how important my work was in those early days, making sure all the children received their awards. But now I coordinate it all, from the ceremony venues, to making sure we have all the caps and gowns we need as well as making sure we have all the children's awards ready in time.' And that's no small task Sakina!

Sakina adds 'I think over the 9 years I’ve been with CU, I have developed all 8 of the life skills we continually talk about, to different degrees. For example, my Problem Solving skills have developed loads over the last 18 months – the biggest problem I think we have solved is being able to continue to offer CU during a global pandemic. Facing other problems before this now seems minor. Trying to work out the logistics of ceremonies and certificates but then trying to do them from home in a completely different setting was challenging, but a key thing with problem solving is about working together with others which we do really well in the CU Team. We identified what we wanted to achieve (children receiving awards) then worked backwards and put in all the steps we needed to, to solve the new challenges brought by lockdown.'

But we're always talking about learning being a lifelong journey here in the Sheffield CU Team and Sakina agrees; 'I'm still developing skills - we all are - which is why working in the Sheffield CU Team is so good. It's so varied and there's always a new opportunity to get involved with - somewhere I can gain more experience and develop more skills.’

‘Take Leadership for example – this is one of the skills that I’m still really developing but have come so far with during my time at CU. When I started as an Apprentice I didn’t make any important decisions really, and I very much followed the path that had already been laid by my team. Now I take more of a lead in decision making, like managing the CU Festival of Fun for the first time this year. I was responsible for planning and arranging all the activities and making sure they would be delivered in some really good venues that were easy for people to get to. I had to liaise with all the Learning Destinations and make sure the programme was pulled together accurately and on time. But at the same time, I also needed to make sure everything was within our small budget. I was making decisions about thousands of pounds of money which was scary at first but I knew the team had confidence and faith in me to use my Leadership skills effectively. I've really enjoyed it and learned so much too.' Sakina’s done a fantastic job with the CU Festival of Fun this year - we're sure you'll agree!

But Sakina already knows which skills she'd like to focus on next...

'Speaking – that's one that I’m still working on but it’s something I do more of now, speaking in front of an audience. This is something I continue to struggle with, however it’s a huge part of my role within CU now, from speaking in smaller groups at our school network meetings to speaking to the whole audience at award ceremonies. I thoroughly enjoy being able to share and promote the great work our partners and children and young people have been doing but speaking about them to an audience still makes me nervous.'

'Developing skills is part of my everyday work and it's so important. That, as well as learning to work with others - Teamwork – that's the one skill that makes every bit of difference. Teamwork is something I really feel I’ve developed the most but have no doubt it’s the one that will continue to develop the most too. Being part of a team can sometimes be a little daunting if I’m honest, especially when you’re new or someone new joins your team but over time it’s the thing that I have learned to value the most. I now understand and appreciate that I have had these opportunities and the amazing experiences because my team have encouraged and supported me through everything.'

And Sakina has this message for all our CU members and their families...

'Working within CU has been an eye-opening experience. Following all your journeys to see how much resilience and determination you’ve all got is inspiring and is something that I learn from every day. It’s with thanks to the children, young people and their families that make my job as enjoyable as it is. For that I owe huge thanks to them, for making each day different. It’s crazy to think what I was like 9 years ago to what I am now. I just hope the next however many years are as fun, enjoyable and educational as these past nine years have been😊.'

Sheffield CU Inspirational Stories

We know this year been really challenging for our children, young people and families in LOTS of different ways. Despite this, we are pleased to announce that we have awarded over 3,500 Bronze level awards, 2,800 Silver level awards and 2,500 Gold level awards to our fantastic Sheffield children and young people during the pandemic as well as awarding many more CU credits in between! We are SO impressed with the continued commitment to voluntary learning, whether that be home learning challenges, zoom gymnastics in the garden, virtual scouts groups, at school based activities or with our fab Learning Destinations now they are back up and running. As always, we are SO proud of all our wonderful CU members and their resilience during the past 18 months.

Another person who knows all about overcoming barriers to succeed is 19 year old Yorkshire born Jodie Ounsley who is the first deaf female rugby player to be selected for an international squad and represent England at Rugby Sevens, scoring her maiden try on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series stage in Cape Town. Profoundly deaf from birth, as a child she soon developed a determined mindset and the resilience to overcome barriers. Her positive view on life has led to lots of successes on her journey to becoming an international professional athlete. Whilst some would say her hearing was a disability, Jodie views it as a strength that has given her the opportunity to connect and reach out to children and young people to inspire the next generation.

We hope to bring you more from Jodie as we celebrate the Rugby League World Cup, which due to the arrive in Sheffield this Autumn, but in the meantime, Jodie has recorded a special video to congratulate our CU members on all their efforts and to share her inspirational story too! It is definitely worth a watch to click here to view: https://youtu.be/_4labtzW3LM or the link below and please share with your children and young people too!

Have wonderful summer break!

The Bears are here!

Happy Monday everyone! Today we have some bearilliant news to share...the Bears of
Sheffield have arrived and we have TWO CU challenges to help you get involved!
From today until the end of September, there are 100 little bears and 60 big bears out and about on the streets of Sheffield and some will be hiding in indoor venues too. So, there's plenty of time to get out exploring the city, and do some bear-spotting along the way.

The Bears of Sheffield is being coordinated by Sheffield Children's Hospital NHS and Charity and will help fund a new Cancer and Leukaemia Ward at Sheffield Children’s through donations, merchandise, sponsorship challenges and fundraising throughout the trail. At the end the Bears will also be auctioned off to the highest bidder to raise money!

You can find details of the trail and more information at www.bearsofsheffield.com

In addition, the Sheffield CU Team have been working incredibly hard with the Bears of Sheffield Team and have developed TWO special Children's University Bears of Sheffield Challenges - and if you have a CU Passport to Learning, you can earn 3 CU credits for EACH challenge!

CHALLENGE 1: The activity trail

We'd like you to visit some of the bears on the trail with your families, then complete the challenge sheet, telling us which three bears are your favourites and why. Make sure you read the information plaques with each bear so you can also tell us some facts and new information you've learned. Then, it's time to get creative and use the template to design your own Bear of Sheffield. Once complete, email pictures of your completed challenge to us at CU@sheffield.gov.uk and we'll award you with 3 CU credits for your Passport to Learning.

CHALLENGE 2: The Sheffield CU Bears of Sheffield Fundraising Challenge

Since March 2019, we've created and published over 150 Home Learning Challenges so we couldn't let the Bears of Sheffield go by without creating a special one-off challenge! For this activity, we're challenging Sheffield CU members to create their own fundraising activity - it might be a sponsored activity, it might be raising money by volunteering to do jobs about the house or for others, or maybe even selling craft items or baked goodies that you've made. The choice is yours! Ask an adult to help you plan and run your fundraiser, then pay in the money afterwards. Everything you raise will help the Sheffield Children's Hospital's fundraising towards the brand new cancer and leukaemia ward so let's see how much Sheffield CU can raise together! Make sure you send us a Learning Reflection Diary (download it from https://bit.ly/SCULearningReflectionDiary) and photos or other evidence to show us your amazing fundraising efforts, and we'll award you with 3 CU credits for your Passport to Learning.

Get involved...

You can download both challenges from https://bit.ly/SCUBearsofSheffield2021

If you attend a Sheffield school and haven't yet got a CU Passport to Learning, don't worry! You can buy one from us (£4.50 inc postage to your home address) using this link: https://bit.ly/SCUOrderPassporttoLearning

We hope you all have a bearilliant summer with the Bears of Sheffield and we can't wait to see your adventures!

CU Parent/Carer Survey - tell us what you think!

At Sheffield Children’s University, we are on a mission to find out what parents/carers and families think about the service we offer so we can make sure we are doing all we can to meet the needs of children, young people and families in our city.

Any answers will remain anonymous and help us improve our service as well as understand the impact being part of Sheffield CU has had on each family. We really appreciate anyone taking the time to answer these questions, which should take no more than 15 minutes in total to complete. All questions are optional.

Please help us by filling our quick survey, and sharing it with your friends and family too!

Celebrating 2020

The festive season is upon us, the year is drawing to a close, and there is still only one thing to do.

Celebrate!

2020 has certainly been a year like no other! It’s brought so many challenges and difficulties for us all, but as we reflect back, there have been some opportunities too. Sheffield CU is built on the belief that learning can take place anywhere, including at home and online too, and our children, families, schools and Learning Destinations have proven just that!

We have been truly amazed by the resilience, positivity, commitment and kindness shown by the amazing children and young people of our city and our families, schools, partners, Learning Destinations and fellow keyworkers. We feel so proud to have been able to continue to provide what support we could and to roll out a few new developments of our own too. We look forward to 2021 and hopefully welcoming and celebrating the commitment and achievements of our amazing CU members at one of our real life award ceremonies as soon as possible!

In the meantime, here’s our Sheffield CU year in numbers…

  • 46,159 children and young people with CU credits in Sheffield
  • 3,536,887 CU credits awarded so far – with over 200,000 hours added in 2020
  • 2,862 out of school activities registered with us in 2020 (and counting!). This is actually more than last year’s figure, and clearly demonstrates the commitment to learning shown by Sheffield children and young people, even when at home and taking part in home learning challenges!
  • 64 schools signed up and engaged with Sheffield Children’s University
  • 236 Learning Destinations (approved activity providers) participating across Sheffield. 25 brand new Learning Destinations have been added in 2020 with many activity providers adapting their delivery and working in new innovative COVID secure ways!
  • 2,000 Gold awards, 3,000 Silver & 3,700 Bronze awards have been issued during 2020. There have been an amazing 93,000 CU Awards issued since 2008 proving just how talented and committed Sheffield children, young people and families are to their out of school learning!
  • 3 brand new virtual ceremony experiences were rolled out to our award winners who couldn’t attend a real life ceremony due to lockdown and COVID restrictions. Children and young people were invited to take part in a new ‘Create your own CU ceremony’ home learning challenge and then watch a Sheffield CU virtual ceremony video. The home learning challenge encouraged our award winners people to invite their families to celebrate with them, make special refreshments to enjoy, create their own stage, and make their mortarboard to throw, whilst the ceremonies were full of special speeches from VIPs such as the Sheffield City Region Mayor Dan Jarvis, children’s author David Walliams and HM Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire Andrew Coombe. It also had special performances from schools, Sheffield Music Hub and experiments, activities and a specially written poem too. Follow the link here to see the video we created to celebrate our first ever virtual ceremony and our award winners achievements: https://youtu.be/db57y8RdB_k
  • Over 100 Sheffield CU home learning challenges were created by the team and published daily from March 2020 to provide support to children, young people, families and schools during this extraordinary time. Challenges included creating their own obstacle course, making memory maps, garden bug hunts, creating their own comic book, learning sign language, doing superhero yoga, making their own cook book, creating a museum at home, writing poetry and many, many more! Check out our celebratory video created back in June: https://youtu.be/UBFJVAFjjS8
  • 10 Learning Destinations delivered 68 free taster sessions as part of the 6th annual Sheffield CU Festival of Fun in the summer holidays. Collectively, they offered over 1,800 bookable places for children and families (many more required no booking at all!) to participate in activities from dance, drama and music, to gaming, arts and crafts and outdoor learning.  While many of the activities were online or remote learning, some were delivered in 'real life' in a Covid-secure way such as guided walks and trails.
  • 29 schools are taking part in our 2020 Year of the Nurse Project in a Box to help inspire our children and young people to become the nurses of the future! We have been working with the Clinical Educator for Weston Park Hospital, Cherie Rushton, to develop this year’s project and sessions include exploring the history of nursing as well as challenging stereotypes of nursing as a career. The children who take part will also learn about the body, what happens when things go wrong (for example with allergies) and see what life is like through the eyes of a nurse working on a ward, in a clinic and in the community. There is even an opportunity for the children to learn some basic first aid too. The project will also include supplementary resources with colleagues from Sheffield Hallam University, to help give children an insight into studying nursing as a career, as well as forming a link between the school pupils and current and alumni nursing students.
  • 1 ‘Sheffield CU – How does it make a difference?’ report was published, which provides detailed evidence of the impact of Children’s University in Sheffield. This built on our previous reports and included in-depth analysis of the positive impact of participation in CU activities on attainment, attendance and progress, as well as anecdotal evidence of impact through a number of case studies.
  • 8 essential life skills defined by Skills Builder (such as leadership, creativity, problem solving and listening) that children and young people develop by taking part in CU activities are now being identified by schools and Learning Destinations and tracked by our Sheffield CU database. These skills have been recognised as those that everyone needs to help them succeed in education and life as well as almost any job so being able to develop and provide evidence of them through Children's University will support children and young people succeed in their future employment too. CU schools also now receive brand new monthly home learning challenges focused on developing each of the 8 essential skills which are shared regularly with children and families.
  • 10 activities were funded through the Sheffield CU Acorn Fund which enables children and young people to bid for funds to develop, sustain or re-invigorate a CU activity in school. Activities funded in this round included a baking club, table tennis, arts and crafts, switch club, rock art, board game club and bee club.
  • 2 South Yorkshire CU network meetings, which brought together existing CU centres in Sheffield and Doncaster as well as the brand new CU centre in Rotherham for the first time took place this year. This work, funded by the Sheffield City Region Mayor Dan Jarvis, and led by Katie and Helen through Sheffield Hallam University aims to create a brand new regional CU partnership to create even more opportunities for the children and families of South Yorkshire. Watch this space for more developments in 2021!
  • And a partridge in a pear treeeee!

Merry Christmas!

North Star 'People's Picture' - Home Learning Activity!

Do you have a child who LOVES all things STEM-related (science, technology, engineering and maths)? Then here are some activities which will really get them thinking. It’s ideal for secondary-age pupils but might be OK for Key Stage 2 pupils with a little help.

North Star Science School
are leading the way to bring communities together from across the region by celebrating a love of science with an interactive galaxy. Science is everywhere – from the moment the sun rises, right through to the stars in the night sky. It inspires, helps save lives, challenges us and educates which is why it’s important we celebrate science itself and the brilliant minds behind it whenever we can.

As part of a recent North Star event, the People’s Picture was created. The People’s Picture is a photography and design studio from British artist Helen Marshall. People were asked to submit photos that show why science is important to them. The finished interactive picture is made up of thousands of of those photos, yet every single one tells a story. Zoom in for a closer look!

‘North Star: a People’s Picture’ has created an interactive artwork aiming to bring people together to celebrate a love of science and the great minds who have charted a course through innovation in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths. The final piece (pictured) was revealed at the North Star event earlier this month and also contains links to additional learning resources from the live event – here’s where CU comes in, as North Star is a validated Learning Destination!

Visit their website: https://www.northstarscienceschool.co.uk/the-peoples.../ Have a go at zooming in, and looking at all the pictures of science inspiration that were sent in! Click on the orange stars within the image, and you’ll be led to a range of activities (from testing the speed of sound using toilet rolls, to expanding vegetables and measuring pendulum swings!). There are also some stars with information about the expert scientists who were involved in the event.

Have fun completing any of the activities from the People’s Picture links (click on the orange stars), then complete a CU Home Learning Reflection Diary (download it from https://bit.ly/SheffCUReflectionDiary) and email it to CU@sheffield.gov.uk with some evidence of your learning for each activity (e.g. photos of you doing the activities or your finished work, video, etc.). We’ll award 1 CU credit for each activity completed. Remember to include your Passport to Learning number (you’ll find this on the first page) on your reflection diary!

Planning your October half term fun?

The Sheffield Children's University Passport home learning activity newsletter for the October half term holiday is now available!

You can find the newsletter here: http://bit.ly/SCUOctPassportNewsletter

As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and resulting Government guidance, some of our Learning Destinations are not running as they normally would. However, many are delivering their activities in a different way, using platforms such as Zoom and Youtube which is great to see! Please do check with them directly about this as CU credits can still be earned by taking part in these activities (as normal, or virtually) and Learning Destinations will be sending us registers as usual. You can find a full list of all our Learning Destinations in the newsletter.

There are also links to our very own Sheffield CU home learning challenges! If you would like to take part in any of the challenges, we have collated details on them all into the newsletter. There is currently no time limit, and no order in which to do these so feel free to pick and chose as you like!

With the libraries closed, we know its difficult to get a Sheffield CU Passport to Learning at the moment. We are really pleased to announce that you can now order these online from us directly!
Please click here and make sure you provide all details: https://bit.ly/SCUOrderPassporttoLearning

Passports will cost £4.50 (incl. postage). Due to restricted access to our offices at the moment, we will post these out as soon we have access, but please do bear with us as there is likely to be a delay!

Celebrating our individual Passport to Learning members!

We have some exciting news to share, and what better day to share it than a Friday?!

First, a few questions... Does your child collect CU credits in your Passport to Learning at Learning Destinations across the city? Is their school not currently subscribed to Sheffield CU? If your answer is YES to both these questions, then please keep reading!!!

Each year in May and October, we welcome over 2000 of our individual Passport members to celebrate their achievements at one of our gold award ceremonies. Around these times, we also send any Bronze and Silver awards earned to home addresses.

During 2020, we haven’t been able to host our ceremonies as normal due to COVID restrictions and access to our offices has been strictly limited, meaning we have been unable to create award certificates as normal too.

We have had to think outside the box and whilst it's taken a little while to create something new, one thing is for certain - NOTHING stops us from celebrating our award winners, not even a pandemic! We are thrilled to announce that during October, we will host our first virtual award ceremony for our individual Passport members!

If your child collects CU credits using a Passport only (and doesn’t currently attend a CU school) and is eligible to receive one of our Gold awards for 100, 200, 300 hrs etc, you will soon be receiving a letter through the post inviting you and your child to take part in our special virtual ceremony experience! If your child is eligible to receive a Silver or Bronze award at this time, these will also be created and sent next month.

ALL the information you need is on your invitation letter, so please read it VERY carefully and make sure you email us by the deadline of Friday 23rd October to take part!

We can’t wait to celebrate with you!!! 🥳🤩🎈🎊🎓

Sheffield CU - How does it make a difference?

We firmly believe that every child in Sheffield should have the chance to reach their potential and become the very best they can be. Supporting children and young people to learn and celebrating their achievements has never been more important.
We know that children who thrive in school and in later life develop their confidence, aspirations and love of learning from the skills, characteristics and passions they develop both in and beyond the classroom.

Here at Sheffield CU, we encourage children and young people from the age of 5 to try new learning experiences in and outside of school; at breakfast, lunchtime and after school clubs and in their own time, in the local library, museum or further afield.

Culminating in an inspirational graduation ceremony, this learning adventure gives children and young people the opportunity to enrich their childhoods, nurture a lifelong love of learning, unlock their skills and talents and develop their aspirations and confidence regardless of their backgrounds.

So how do we know that taking part in Sheffield CU makes a difference? Well, we do lots of work looking at the impact of participation in these activities. With over 47,000 children and young people in our city with CU credits logged in our database, we have a lot of information to work with!

And the results speak for themselves! Children and young people who take part in Sheffield CU activities consistently do better than those who aren’t involved, and they make more progress too.

Don’t believe us? Then see for yourself!

We are really pleased and proud to share our 2019/20 ‘Sheffield Children’s University – How does it make a difference?’ impact report which provides detailed evidence of the impact of Children’s University (CU) in Sheffield.

You can find a summary of the key findings here: http://bit.ly/SheffieldCUImpactSummary2020
